Yoga just as good for back pain as physical therapy

Yoga is just as safe and effective at helping lower back pain than physical therapy, a new study has found. Research into a racially diverse group of 320 adults with chronic low back pain found that yoga just as good as physical therapy for relieving pain and restoring function. The findings are published in Annals of Internal Medicine. It also helped to reduce reliance on medication as much as physical therapy.

Chronic low back pain affects around 10 million adults in Britain and is most prevalent in racial or ethnic minorities and in people of lower socioeconomic status. Physical therapy is the most common therapy prescribed by physicians, but clinical guidelines and research also support yoga. But, until now, how these two therapies stack up against one another has not been studied.
Researchers from Boston Medical Center randomly assigned participants to 12 weekly yoga classes, 15 physical therapy visits, or an educational book and newsletters about coping with chronic low back pain. The researchers found that a year later there was still nothing to choose between the effectiveness of yoga and physical therapy.

Antarctic pollution 'much higher' than thought, study warns

The Antarctic is much more polluted than previously thought, according to an alarming new study. Researchers from the University of Hull have found that the volume of tiny plastic fragments in the Antarctic's Southern Ocean is five times higher than previous estimates.
These 'microplastics' - from tiny beads used to roughen toothpaste to synthetic clothing fibres released from washing clothes - wreak havoc on marine life, as they find their way into the sea food chain.
Researchers estimate that up to 500 kg microplastic particles from personal care products and up to 25.5 billion clothing fibres enter the Southern Ocean per decade as a result of tourism, fishing and scientific research activities. More...

Tai Chi
for Beginners

Tai Chi Ch'uan is an ancient form of slow, graceful and rhythmic exercise which originated in China.

Tai Chi is sometimes referred to as 'meditation in movement' or 'swimming in air'. It's unlike any of the 'hard' martial arts which rely on force and speed.

Tai Chi strengthens our internal energy, and allows it to flow more freely through the body.
It is gentle and non-violent, though after much practice is an extremely effective form of self defence.
